Work began on Phase 1 of the scheme in Spring 2006 and is now nearing completion. The N4 and Ballymount Junctions have been extensively upgraded and three lanes and an auxiliary lane (joining successive Junctions) are in operation in that 8km section. The N7 (Red Cow) Junction will be completed shortly.

This has been reconstructed to a full free-flowing Junction. The Junction is grade separated with the M50 mainline passing underneath. Four new road bridges and one new pedestrian / cyclist bridge have been constructed and one existing pedestrian bridge was reconstructed as a pedestrian / cyclist bridge.

This has been reconstructed into a signalised Junction with free-flow slip lanes for left turning traffic. The existing bridge has been upgraded to three lanes and one additional two lane road bridge has been constructed to the north of the existing road bridge.

The N7 Junction will become a free-flow Junction. The Junction is grade separated with the M50 mainline passing underneath and the Luas will travel on a segrated corridor so removing the existing need for trams and road traffic to cross each other. Eight new Road / Tramway Bridges and two new Footbridges are being constructed as well as many retaining structures and the three old Bridges are being reused.

The Design & Build contract was awarded to a joint venture consortium, SIAC Ferrovial, and is supervised by Arup Consulting Engineers on behalf of South Dublin County Council/National Roads Authority.
