The M50 Upgrade Scheme involves upgrading ten Junctions, adding a third lane and an auxiliary lane in each direction over a distance of 31km between the M1 and Sandyford Junctions. The Upgrade will reduce traffic congestion and provide significant time savings for motorists who use the M50. Phase 1 of the M50 Upgrade is being funded by the Irish Exchequer under the National Development Plan (2000 - 2006) while Phase 2 is being delivered through the PPP mechanism.
Work began on Phase 1 of the scheme in Spring 2006 and will be completed shortly. It consists of upgrading 8km of the existing dual carriageway between the N4, (Galway Road), N7 (Naas Road/Red Cow Roundabout) and Ballymount Interchange.
Phase 2 of the M50 Upgrade Project commenced in January 2008. This involves upgrading the motorway from junction 3 (M1 Interchange) to junction 6 (N3 Blanchardstown Interchange), and from junction 11 (N81 Tallaght Interchange) to junction 14 (R133 Sandyford Interchange).
